After the Withdrawal of AFC-M23 Rebels, Alphamin Resumes Mining Activities in Walikale
“This decision was made after the insurgents moved east of Walikale, heading towards Nyabiondo and Masisi, more than 130 km east of the mining site,” a statement released on Thursday, April 9, 2024, revealed.
The company has started redeploying its staff “as part of a gradual restart plan for tin production, while maintaining heightened monitoring of the security situation.”
“The mine currently holds sufficient stock of consumables and spare parts to support operational recovery,” the statement added.
Although mining operations were halted in mid-March due to the takeover of Walikale by the Rwandan army and AFC-M23 rebels, Alphamin continued uninterrupted maintenance, upkeep, and tin concentrate export activities.
According to the Technical Coordination and Mining Planning Unit (CTCPM) of the Ministry of Mines, Alphamin Bisie accounted for 99% of industrial tin exports in 2024, totaling 26,932.10 tons, valued at $348.6 million.
